Amund-1
Prototype #1
Trying myself as a
tube buggy builder. The masterpiece is loosely based on the first
drawing below, but with a different drivetrain than drawn, and a
little longer (probably ending up somewhere between 250-290 cm
wheelbase). Plans as for now are: 304 motor w/auto -> volvo M40
4-speed -> hiace transfer, Unimog 406/416 steering axles front and
rear with disc brakes, power steering box from Scania truck was
picked up because of price, feel and feedback, (referring to the one
I put on the sugga)
but I bought something three times bigger than I thought (buying via
phone and e-mail, very clever), so that is ditched due to space
restrictions, I am now hunting affordable hydrostatic steering.
Planning to use one-link coil sprung suspension.
I am using
whatever parts lies around or are cheap, the trade-off is weight. It
will be some heavy-ass shit, but it's better than the alternative,
which is not affording a single bolt. These axles were actually the
cheapest axles with lockers I could find anywhere. 4x 47" tall
(14.9x24") tractor tyres with rims I got for less than the price
of one 31" MT/R... Still trying to keep size down though, which
I believe I've managed, except for the long drive train, which is my
only choice right now to get a decent crawl ratio. (More exotic
engine/gearbox combinations can always be installed later, if needed
and money allows it. Jeep 4.0/aw4/NP231 or 242 comes to mind) It will
still be quite compact for the wheel size I believe, about 2.10
meters outside wheels when in inner position (adjustable tractor
rims). The plan is to be able to turn the meats to full 50 degree
lock with insane flex at inner position, but I'll probably have to
trade off between width and steering angle (easily adjustable) and/or
flex. We'll see.
